Welcome to New Mexico State University's Web site for Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social (MALCS)/Women Active in Letters and Social Change. NMSU is honored to host the 2009 MALCS Summer Institute on its Las Cruces campus from July 22 through 25, 2009. 

There are only 4 days left to this year's Summer Institute.  Please register asap if you have not done so yet.

NEW AS OF JULY 17, 2009:  As of 5 p.m. today, we will not be able to refund any registration fees, housing fees, or campus meals.  We had to guarantee numbers for Housing and Campus Dining as of close of business today.

Registration:  If you have not registered yet, please do so as soon as possible.  You can register on-line and pay by credit card on line.  Please do not delay.  Just click here: Register and pay by Credit Card.  If you are paying by check or credit card, please make it payable to New Mexico State University.  Our mailing address is indicated on the second page of the registration form.  We are no longer accepting early registrations.

Dorm Housing:  If you are staying in Garcia Hall on our campus, please reserve your room now.  You can do so on the registration form.

NEW AS OF JULY 17, 2009:  We still have a few dorm rooms available.  Please let us know if you need housing on our campus as soon as posible.  If you registered for housing on-line, your receipt will confirm that a room has been reserved for you.  If you registered by mail, please contact my office so we can confirm your room is reserved.

Hotels:  Several hotels in our area have agreed to provide a discounted rate for individuals attending the MALCS Summer Institute.  For a list of hotels in the area, please click here.  The rates for the hotels are also indicated on that page under the name and address of each hotel. 

NEW AS OF JULY 8, 2009:  The reduced rates provided by hotels expire this week.  If you plan to stay at a hotel, make your reservations as soon as possible! 

NEW AS OF JULY 9, 2009: Sylvia Peregrino from the University of Texas at El Paso is working with the MALCS Executive Committee and NMSU's On-Site Committee to provide a tour of the border on Sunday, July 26.  You can visit UTEP, see El Paso, and eat and shop at the Mercado Mayapan.  UTEP will also provide free rides to the El Paso International Airport.  Spaces are limited to 60 seats on the air-conditioned bus.  Seats will be reserved on a first come, first served basis.  To reserve your seat, please contact Dr. Peregrino at as soon as possible.  Gracias!

Schedule of Events:  We have finalized the Schedule of Events for this year's Summer Institute.  In addition to three plenary sessions, we are delighted to announce 61 sessions.  If you would like to know the schedule of events, please go to the side bar to your left and click on Institute Schedule.  Our office has notified all presenters and co-presenters of the Time, Date, and Place of their sessions. If you submitted a proposal and did not hear from us, please call us immediately!  Gracias!

Evening in Mesilla:  Several merchants from the Town of Mesilla have agreed to stay open beyond their normal hours on Thursday, July 23, 2009!  We are delighted with these wonderful merchants.  Please visit the Evening in Mesilla page on the left-hand side bar.

Vendor Tables:  We will have several attendees selling their homemade products in the Aggie Underground on the first floor of Corbett Center.  We hope you will visit their vendor tables and purchase their products.  Per NMSU written policy, no vendors may sell books at the Summer Institute.  Attendees wanting their books sold at the Summer Institute should contact Frankie Miller at NMSU's Bookstore.  She can be reached at 575-646-7660 or by emailing her at  Thank you for your support!
