Border as Mirror: Negotiating the View from Here
As of May 13, 2009: We are no longer accepting any papers. We appreciate all the 225 presenters, who submitted proposals prior to the deadline. If you submitted a proposal and have not heard from us, please contact us immediately. We look forward to seeing all of you in July!
The 2009 MALCS Site Committee invites academics, activists and community members of all disciplines and fields of interest to submit proposals for individual papers, whole panel sessions, roundtables, workshops, performances, conversations or alternative formats. Proposals must be submitted through the MALCS NMSU Summer Institute online submission system, which can be found at http://institute.malcs.net.
Several members have requested an extension to submit their papers. We have, therefore, extended the deadline for submissions to May 8, 2009. Presenters were notified on May 19, 2009 about their proposal's status.
Our committee considered the theme carefully. We agreed that "Border as Mirror: Negotiating the View from Here" was best suited for this historic moment and this particular geographic place. Situated 45-minutes north of the Mexico-U.S. border, it was imperative that we emphasize a dialogue that recognizes and challenges the border concept. The site committee is proud to host the MALCS organization and its constituents this year because it gives us the chance to collectively reflect about the past, situate the present and view our future.
Our theme is designed to create a space in which this year's participants can consider the past struggles our shared communities have endured, reflect upon who we are as individuals and a contemporary collective, and look through the border/mirror to what lies before us. We want to talk about how violent, porous, powerful and negotiable borders are. We know the political, economic and social ramifications of national borders demand action from a conscientious population. After long conversations about these complex issues of borders, alliances and our particular location temporally and geographically, we offer up the same question at a more intimate level-to ask how we build borders among ourselves and among our allies. With respect and sincerity, we pose these questions so that we can engage the ongoing question of alliances at this meeting. In this renewed historic moment of identity politics, it is perhaps time to review the history of Chicana/Latina and Native/Tribal struggles and consider our current situation while looking to and shaping our future. Remembering the ideas of the late poet/scholar/activist, Gloria E. Anzaldua- borders are internal and psychological as much as they physically divide communities, nations and ideologies. They are also a place to commune, converse and heal.
