NEW AS OF JUNE 24, 2009:

We have finalized our Summer Institute Schedule.  We are delighted that we have three outstanding plenary sessions.  Plenary Session I will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2009 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the Middle Ballroom on the third floor of Corbett Center.  Panelists include:  Eva Arce (activist and mother of Sylvia Arce), Paula Flores (activist and mother of Sagrario Gonzalez, Lucha Castro (human rights attorney the Centro de Derechos Humanso de la Mujer), and Rosa-Linda Fregoso (professor from the University of Californai at Santa Cruz.

Plenary Session II will be held on Friday, July 24, 2009 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Individuals participating on the WINC panel include Carrie Dann (Western Shoshone Defense Project), Mattie Y. Foster (Navajo Nation), and Ines Hernandez-Avila (University of California Davis).  Finally, Plenary Session III will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2009 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.  The title of this panel is "Defending Human Rights and the Challenges of Human Rights Defenders:  U.S.-Mexico International Borders, Transborder, and Transnatinal Possibilities. Panelists inlcude Isabel Garcia (Public Defender in Pima County, AZ), Adelaida Plascencia (Lomas de Poleo Communtiy Member), and Margo Tamez (lipan Apache and Jumano Apache).

We also call your attention to our highlighted panels:  Session 1 (Leading by Example); Session 6 (Organizing Struggles, AFSCME NMSU Local 2393), Session 25 (STEM Literacy and Professions:  A Key to Social Mobility), Session 31 (Women, Community Activism and Economic Development), Session 38 (Native Women in Local and Community Leadership), Session 44 (Negotiating Higher Education for Native and Tribal Communities), Session 50 (Cutting a Pat for Others to Follow:  Perspectives from Tribal Elders), and Session 56 (Educational Success Through Heritage Languages).  All 61 sessions include many, many of our distinguished leaders.  We hope you will enjoy the panels we have put together.  Thank you to all our colegas who submitted proposals.  Finally, we especially welcome our students.
